Edible Glitter Supplier Documents: What Each One Proves

You buy for a production kitchen, a hotel pastry team, a bar program, or a retail shelf. Sooner or later, someone asks what is in the shimmer on the dessert. A health inspector. An insurer. A client's auditor. You do not want to be forwarding an email chain. You want a folder.

So you write to an edible glitter supplier and ask for documentation. A PDF comes back. Now the real question starts. What does that PDF prove?

This guide is the answer. It is a register of documents. For each one: what it proves, what it does not, and when to ask. It works on any supplier in this category, ours included. Every rule quoted here was read from the federal text. The links are at the bottom.

The short answer: ask for five things — the product specification, a lot-specific certificate of analysis, a written statement naming the food categories each color is intended for, the ingredient list as printed on the jar, and the safety data sheet. Ask for the safety data sheet last. It is an occupational document about handling dust, not evidence that a powder belongs in food.

What each supplier document actually proves

The common mistake is treating one document as if it settles everything. Each proves something narrow. Read the third column before the second. The five documents to ask for come first; the last row is a number suppliers often volunteer instead.

The document most buyers ask for first is the one that proves the least about food.

Five questions that qualify an edible glitter supplier

Send all five in one message. A supplier who answers every one has done the work. A supplier who answers three and goes quiet has told you something too.

  1. Which color-additive listing does each color rely on? Not the range. Each color. Shades in one line can differ in composition.
  2. Which food categories is each color intended for, in writing? Cakes and cocktails are different legal categories. One line covering "food and drink" is not an answer.
  3. Will you send a certificate of analysis for the lot you ship me? The word that matters is lot. Ask which lab, and whether it is accredited.
  4. May I see the label artwork before the pallet arrives? If your health department reads one thing, it will be the jar.
  5. What is the lead time, and what changes at case volume? Paperwork you cannot get again in eight weeks is not a supply chain.

Why one ingredient list cannot answer the whole question

Here is the part that catches experienced buyers. A finished glitter is a blend. Each color additive in it carries its own list of permitted foods. The lists are not the same. The widest one does not cover the others.

Read the rows side by side and the trap shows. Mica-based pearlescent pigments sit under 21 CFR 73.350, which permits them category by category and does not list eggnog, tonic water, fruit juices, juice drinks or soft drinks. Synthetic iron oxide sits under 21 CFR 73.200, and its list is narrow: frostings are not listed there, and beverages are not listed there. Titanium dioxide under 21 CFR 73.575 is the broad one, cleared for coloring foods generally up to one percent, though not for foods with a federal standard of identity unless that standard allows the added color.

So "made from color additives the FDA lists" is true of many powders. On its own it settles nothing. The question that settles something is narrower: this color, in this food, on what basis? One quirk, before you ask for the wrong paperwork. These pigments are exempt from batch certification. Certified colors carry a government lot number. These do not, and the rule says so. There is no FDA lot number to request here. That is why a supplier's own lot certificate of analysis carries the weight instead.

Read the label before you read the letterhead

The jar is the document an inspector reads first — before any PDF in your folder.

The FDA advisory on decorative products is addressed to home and commercial bakers. It is short. Three things in it matter to a buyer.

First, the alias list. These powders sell as luster dust, disco dust, twinkle dust, sparkle dust, highlighter, shimmer powder, pearl dust and petal dust. The same words appear on food products and on products that are not food. The name on the tin is not a category.

Second, the label test. Anyone on your team can run it. Companies making edible glitters and dusts are required by law to list ingredients on the label. If a label says only "non-toxic" or "for decorative purposes only" and carries no ingredient list, the FDA says it should not be used directly on foods.

Third, the line that puts this on your desk. The FDA reminds commercial bakers that it is their responsibility as a food manufacturer to produce food that complies with the applicable regulations and with state and local laws. That holds for a large bakery and a home-based business alike. Your supplier's folder does not transfer the duty. It is how you discharge it.

A separate rule covers the color additive's own label. It asks for the name of each ingredient in the mixture, a general use limitation such as "for food use only", the amount of color where a quantitative limit applies, and an expiration date where stability data require one. Formats differ. A bulk color additive shipped to a manufacturer is labeled differently from a retail jar. Ask a supplier which regime their product ships under, and where each element appears.

It arrives within the hour and answers nothing you asked. It is an occupational document, so treat a fast SDS as the start of the conversation, not the end.

The phrase is not a legal category on its own. Ask which listing and which food categories, so the answer is checkable instead of reassuring.

A purity limit is a target. A result is a measurement of one batch. If numbers arrive with no lab, no method and no lot, they are limits.

One statement for a whole range

Colors differ in composition, so one sentence covering twenty shades is a shortcut. Ask per color, which means the answer holds when you swap shades mid-season.

Is a safety data sheet enough to prove edible glitter is food safe?

What is the difference between a spec sheet and a certificate of analysis?

A spec sheet states the limits a product is built to. Those are targets. A certificate of analysis reports measured results for one lot, with the lab, the methods and a date. Specs describe intent. A COA describes a batch. Ask for both, and ask that the COA match your lot.

Does an FDA facility registration mean a glitter product is approved?

No. Registration records that a facility filed with the agency. The FDA states plainly that registration of an establishment does not denote approval of that establishment, nor does it mean a product may be legally marketed. Color additives clear a separate review. Finished foods do not.

How do I check a decorative dust is edible and not craft glitter?
